You Are In The Sales Business

Today, I want to talk about something a little different than our typical legal topics on estate planning, elder law, and business law. I want to talk about the “S” word among attorneys and other professionals. I am referring to the word “Sales.”

Many people in certain professions such as lawyers, doctors, physicians, dentists, physical therapists, and other professions see “sales” and even “marketing” as a dirty word. That our businesses are some how different because of our profession and our extra education we had to obtain to enter our chosen fields.

Let me be clear …

No matter what your industry may be, you do not get to pursue the trade that you love so much, the trade that you spent years and years and thousands and thousands of dollars in extra education to become, without first making a sale.

If there is no business coming in, then there is no work for you to do. Your business suffers, your family suffers, and then eventually, you may have to close the door to the business you loved so much.

Some of you may be reading this and think this isn’t important, and that you are somehow above sales and marketing. However, some of you may be reading this and realize that yes, of course, we are in the sales business.

When I realized this and started devoting time each and every week (and sometimes each day) to the sales process and marketing process, my business changed.

If you are just starting down this process, my first recommendation is to start reading! I spend quite a bit of time on my own personal development and spend quite a bit of time reading business and sales books. Listed below are just a few recommendations to get you on your way:

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Little Red Book of Selling by Jeffrey Gitomer

E Myth Mastery by Michael Gerber

The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino

Sell or Be Sold by Grant Cardone

Just as you should spend each day improving your skill in your business, you should spend each day improving your marketing and sales skills so that you can continue pursuing the business and trade that you love so much.
